Russian war movie filmed in Hoi An town

QUANG NAM — Viet Nam's Chanh Phuong Film Studio and Russia's IKA Film Studio are collaborating on the production of the film Nguoi Linh (The Soldiers), being directed by Stanislav Ivanov.

The film, currently shooting on location around the city of Hoi An city and the vestige site of My Son in the central province of Quang Nam, tells the story of a group of Russian military specialists who come to Viet Nam during the American War.

Pops singers to judge Singapore talent contest

HA NOI — Viet Nam Idol Uyen Linh and singer Nam Cuong will serve on the jury of Music Revolution 2011, a talent contest to be held in Singapore on Friday for Vietnamese students working and studying abroad.

Linh and Cuong will also perform such hits at the event as Cam On Tinh Yeu (Thank You, Love), Chi La Giac Mo (Just a Dream) and Bay Giua Ngan Ha (Fly in Galaxy). The contest is held annually by the Students' Association of the Singapore Management Academy.

Exhibition of S Korean illustrations on show

Ha Noi — The South Korea Cultural Centre has opened an illustrative painting exhibition in Ha Noi.

Over 70 paintings are on display, giving the public a full insight into the development of computer art graphics of South Korea as well as uniquely artistic traits of modern illustrative paintings.

Three Vietnamese painters Cong Quoc Ha, Nguyen The Duy and Nguyen Van Cuong also brought their works of net printing, wooden and gypsum carving, depicting beauty of Vietnamese countryside, nature and heritage.

The exhibition will wrap up tomorrow. — VNS

Film of young, revolutionary President Ho to debut

HA NOI – The joint Viet Nam-China film, Vuot Qua Ben Thuong Hai, or Passing Shanghai Wharf, which charts the revolutionary life of President Ho Chi Minh as the young Nguyen Ai Quoc will premier in cinemas throughout Viet Nam next Friday.

The film follows Nguyen Ai Quoc travels from Hong Kong to Shanghai and his revolutionary activities in China between 1933-1934.

It portrays the young revolutionary's humanity, inner feelings and nobility as he plays with children, recalls childhood folksongs and arranges offerings for his ancestors on New Year's eve.

Although French and Chinese nationalist police hunted the escapee after he fled Hong Kong in 1933, he was able, with the help of Soong Ching-ling, patriotic Vietnamese and international friends in China, to reach Vladivostock, Russia, in 1934.

Vietnamese writers Ha Pham Phu and Le Ngoc Minh and Chinese author Jia Fei wrote the film's script and it was produced by the Viet Nam Writers Association's Film Studio and its Chinese partner, the Zhoujiang Film Studio.

The film will screen at Megastar theatres in Ha Noi and HCM City and the National Cinema Centre, Ha Noi. – VNS

Comedian Nguyen Hanh dies

The much loved comedian, Nguyen Hanh (R), who passed away on Saturday

Comedian Nguyen Hanh passed away at the age of 70 at Hospital 115 last week after a long struggle with diabetes, heart and kidney disease, reports Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper.

Nguyen Hanh performed in many cai luong (Southern opera) and drama troupes including Kim Hoang Nhu Mai, Bich Thuan, Kim Cuong, Song Tuy Hong and Tham Thuy Hang among others. Hanh also played in two movies named Loan mat nhung of Cosunams Film Studio and Sau gio gioi nghiem (After curfew) of My Van Film Studio.

Hanh was known by many fans for his role as Tu van nghe in the television drama Gia dinh ong Ky (Mr. Ky’s family) with actors Tam Van, Kim Cuc, Minh Chanh and Tu Trinh.

After South Liberation Day on April 30, 1975, he joined Bong Hong Theater Company and No. 284 Cai luong troupe where he took part in famous pieces such as Doi Co Luu (The life of Ms. Luu), To Anh Nguyet, Pha Le va Cat Bui (Crystal and Dust) and Nhung vi sao khong ten (Nameless stars). Audiences especially loved his role in the drama Ngao so oc hen of the Sai Gon 1 Stage. His last stage role was as a showman in Than tuong nua dem (Midnight idol) by playwright, Thu An. 

In his personal life, Hanh was known for his optimism and sense of humor and his readiness to teach young actors. Most comedians at Saigon Drama Stage and Nu cuoi moi stage called him their father. Hanh’s work and devotion will be a lesson for generations of young artists.
