French paper reviews book on 1954 battle

dfd

War of words: Pham Thanh Tam's new book on Dien Bien Phu.

PARIS — The French newspaper Le Point ran an article on Tuesday about a book on Viet Nam's 1954 victory in Dien Bien Phu by Vietnamese author Pham Thanh Tam.

War Notebook of a Young Viet Minh Soldier at Dieân Bien Phu (in French: Carnet de Guerre d'une Jeune Viet-Minh a Dien Bien Phu) was published by the France-based Armand Colin Publishing House earlier this month.

The article said that Tam was once a student at the Ha Noi University of Fine Arts who fought for the Viet Minh (Viet Nam League for Independence). Tam wrote the book after seven years at war, when he was just 22 years old, never imagining that his work would ever be published.

Tam tells readers why and how the Viet Nam People's Army defeated the French colonialists at the Dien Bien Phu stronghold.

According to the article, thousands of books have been written about the Indochina War, which ended in defeat for the French colonialists at Dien Bien Phu. However, most of them were written by French war veterans, who expressed their sorrow about the defeat in their writing.

Tam's book gives readers a chance to understand the war and the French colonialists' loss through the eyes of a solider on the other side. — VNS

HCM CITY — A tourism park with a strong cultural theme is being built in time for Tet (lunar New Year) in HCM City's suburban Cu Chi District.

Viet Nam At A Glance, located off Bo Cap (Scorpion) pier in An Phu Commune, resembles a giant garden with traditional varieties of flowers, bonsai, and fruit and bamboo trees of various kinds and sizes.

But designers and carpenters worked hard to create a 22.5-ha village that depicts the cultural and daily aspects of the life of people in various regions of the country.

It has hundreds of model houses, rickshaws, and everyday objects made of bamboo, wood, and clumps of rice straw and grass.

Artisans from as far-flung areas as Cao Bang make traditional dishes, cakes, liquor, and handicrafts, which are both displayed and sold.

There is a playground for traditional games that takes older people back to their childhood when they themselves played those games.

Music and dance and food related to ethnic groups can be seen at several spots around the park.

"We have worked hard with our suppliers, including farms, agricultural companies, and tourist agencies, to make our park one of the city's biggest and best cultural and entertainment centres," Tran Thi Tuyet Nga, a member of the park's managing board, said.

"Through its unique products, we hope visitors will discover and enjoy slices of Viet Nam's history, culture, and lifestyle in different regions.

"I'm sure both local and foreign photographers and artists will find inspiration here."

She and her 200-strong staff hope to welcome 40,000-50,000 visitors during the Tet holidays in the first week of February.

Henry Nguyen Lam, a Vietnamese-American businessman who is visiting the country for Tet, says: "My family and I will tour Cu Chi and visit Viet Nam At A Glance."

Entry tickets cost VND50,000 to 95,000 and are available at the venue. They can also be booked at 08 2218 1465.

Anti-hunting film wins green movie award

HA NOI — A film featuring the illegal hunting of wild animals won a special prize at the fourth Environmental Film Festival held in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

Le Hoai Phuong received VND30 million and the Viet Nam Green Award for his documentary Toi Ac Rung Xanh (Crime in the Forest).

The film depicts hunting activities of wild animals in Binh Thuan Province.

The film's topics and visual effects have left a strong impression on the jury and audiences.

To make the film, Phuong and his staff spent three years following and working with illegal hunters, who agreed to the filming but asked the director to conceal their faces.

"Phuong's work condemns people who destroy forests and hunt wild animals. His film's message calls on people to protect and keep the world and environment safe from disease," said Bui Dinh Hac, veteran film director.

The VND20 million first prize was shared by Vuong Duc for the movie Rung Den (Black Forest), Gia Hung for the documentary Ngu Ngon Thoi Nay (Modern Fable), Trong Hoa for the investigating report Thien Tai va Nhan Tai (Natural Calamities and Man-Made Calamities), and Nguyen Nhan Lap's cartoon Meo Vat (Small Trick).

Ha Noi-skilled director Duc's Rung Den is a quality film that attracted young audiences back to the cinema after its release in 2008. It featured young actors such as Kieu Chinh and Thach Kim Long.

The film described the tragic lives of people who destroy forest land.

Viet Nam Green winner Phuong said that making films featuring environmental problems was not a new experience in Viet Nam.

"Through our work, we hope audiences can learn about saving the natural world and have a visual treat as well," he said.

Organised by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and its partners, the Viet Nam Cinematography Association and Viet Nam Television, this year's national Environment Film Festival attracted 131 entries, including 70 investigating reports, 35 documentaries, 18 science films, four films and four cartoons. — VNS
