A month of German art talks in Vietnam

The Goethe Institute will hold a major series of activities as part of German year in Vietnam with its project ‘Open Academy’.

Activities including workshops, screenings, performances, concerts, actions, lectures and discussions will be held in Hanoi, Hue and HCMC.

Ten artists and musicians from Berlin working in collaboration with Vietnamese artists and musicians will devise works with an emphasis on new media, performance art, conceptual art and design.

The events will bolster the cultural exchange between the two countries. All events are supported by the Goethe Institute Hanoi and the Senat Berlin – Cultural Affairs.

The internationally sought-after performance artist Nezaket Ekici will hold a performance art workshop at Goethe Institute in Hanoi, 56-58 Trang Tien Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November 16 to 19, at HCMC University of Fine Arts, 5 Phan Dang Luu Street, HCMC’s Binh Thanh District from November 22 to 25 and a present a talk at San Art at 5 p.m. on November 21.

Visual artist, Juliane Heise, will give a workshop of mapping in art at the Hue University of Fine Arts from November 16 to 19 and at HCMC University of Fine Art from November 24 and 25.

Fuasi Khaliq is a performing artist who since the early 90’s worked in Los Angeles with a jazz project called Horace Tapscott´s Pan African People´s Arkestra. Khaliq was an assistant conductor, arranger, composer, and player of saxophone, clarinet and flute. He will hold a workshop on jazz improvisation at HTX/La Cooperative, 46 An Duong Street in Hanoi on November 22-24 and give a jazz concert at 9 p.m. on November 24, a workshop in Hue on November 26-27, concert at 4 p.m. on November 27 and a workshop at Himiko Cake, 324bis Dien Bien Phu Street, HCMC’s District 10 on November 30 and a jazz concert at the cafĂ© at 9 p.m. on December 3.

Artist Stephan Kurr will give workshop on tourism and travel in HCMC University of Fine Arts from November 15 to 19.

Veronika Radulovic, who has participated in numerous international symposiums and projects, among others in Hungary, Norway, Poland, Japan and the Netherlands and studied Vietnamese lacquer painting techniques and worked as the first German DAAD guest lecturer at the Universities of Fine Arts in Hanoi, Hue and HCMC, will give a workshop called Das Private in Hue from November 17 to 19 and in HCMC from November 19 to December 1.

While Andreas Schmid will give a workshop ‘Dealing with Space’ in HCMC from November 17 to 20. Maria Vedder will screen her video art in HCMC University of Fine Arts at 3 p.m. on November 18, 19 and at San Art at 7 p.m. November 20.

Machael Vorfeld will give a concert at ZERO Station, 91A Dinh Tien Hoang Street, HCMC’s Binh Thanh District on November 19; Danh Vo will take a city tour with students in Hanoi from November 30 to December 4. Veronika Witte will give workshop on videoart and scenic sculptures at University of Fine Arts Hue on November 22 to 25.

HCMC University of Architecture comes first and second at Holcim Prize

Two of three teams from the HCMC University of Architecture defeated other competing teams to grasp the gold and silver prizes in the final round of the Holcim Prize 2010 competition in HCMC last week.

A four-member team of the university won the first prize trophy and pocketed VND50 million for its ecological floating toilet project and another VND150 million to translate their research into reality within six months. The other team of the university got the second prize worth VND10 million for its project to build floating houses in the flood-prone Mekong Delta.

The third prize worth VND7 million went to a team from the Hanoi University of Architecture. The 12 teams attending the final were from the HCMC University of Architecture, the HCMC University of Technology, Can Tho University and the Hanoi University of Architecture.

“We wish that the winners, supported by the application fund from Holcim, will have a successful implementation of their research result in the next six months and will bring back great benefits for the community within the project area as well as to the society at large,” Gary Schutz, general director of Holcim Vietnam Ltd., said in his opening remarks at the final competition held at the HCMC University of Technology.

Organizer Holcim Vietnam also granted three other prizes in the sustainable construction, environment and community categories to the teams from the HCMC University of Technology, Can Tho University and the Hanoi University of Architecture respectively. The six remaining teams received consolation prizes.

The Holcim Prize 2010 attracted over 95 entries from the four universities which outlined their creative ideas on community development, sustainable construction and environmental protection.

Schutz of Holcim Vietnam said, “Let’s make Holcim Prize a successful way to activate the smart and curious minds of the students who participate in a way which makes you all “Sustainable Development Ambassadors” within your campus life and for the rest of your life! If it does then Holcim Vietnam looks forward to receiving more participation in Holcim Prize 2011.”

Singapore art show in HCMC seeks college applicants

The LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore will hold an arts exhibition and open day at the HCMC University of Fine Arts gallery, 5 Phan Dang Luu Street in HCMC’s Binh Thanh District.

The exhibition will feature works by 17 Vietnamese and Singaporean students studying in the college. Works include five graphic designs, two interior designs, nine paintings, six fashion works, three animations and four short films. There will be information about the college and Vietnamese interested in studying there can enroll at the exhibition.

The college has a growing number of Vietnamese students enrolling in design and film courses. Two film study graduates, Boo Junfeng and Jennie Nguyen Vo Ngoc Diem, will be there to talk about their experience at Lasalle. Boo Junfeng directed a film called Sandcastle which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and has been selected to compete at the Vietnamese International Film Festival in Hanoi from October 17-21. Jennie Nguyen Vo Ngoc Diem, a lecturer at HCMC University of Theater and Cinema, directed one of the short films to be screened at the exhibition. “…We want more Vietnamese students to go abroad to add their vision to international arts education,” said Kim Dy-Liacco, director of marketing at the Lasalle.

Visitors can design a poster for one of the short films being screened at the exhibition, to be in the running for a prize trip to the LASALLE campus in Singapore, including return flights, food and accommodation for four nights, plus VND4 million spending money. All the entries will be uploaded on Facebook, with winners to be decided November 7.

Lotte Group grants US$10,000 in scholarships

Twenty-two outstanding HCMC students on Monday received Lotte Foundation scholarships worth over US$10,000 at a ceremony at Lotte Mart Saigon South in HCMC’s District 7.

The students who are majoring in Korean studies, economics, finance and accounting from four universities in HCMC - University of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Law, University of Economics and University of Foreign Languages – Information Technology (Huflit) were awarded scholarships worth US$460 to US$480 each.

Nguyen Duy Nu Hong Han, a studious poor student of the Korean studies faculty at Huflit who won the scholarship for a second time, said she would use the scholarship to get a second bachelor degree at the University of Law to prepare as a law consultant in a Korean company.

“A Korean proverb tells that a small help is more meaningful than a big promise. We hope that our small act could help these students with their studies and to become talents of the country,” said Hong Pyong Gyu, general director of LotteMart under the Lotte Group at the ceremony.

The Lotte Foundation which was established in 1983 has carried out its scholarship program in Vietnam since 2008. The scholarships are granted twice a year to students in HCMC and Hanoi.

Poor students get helping hand from PepsiCo Vietnam and STF

PepsiCo Vietnam and the Saigon Times Foundation (STF) granted ten scholarships to junior and senior students of HCMC University of Economics, University of Agriculture and Forestry, and University of Industry on Saturday at HCMC University of Economics in HCMC.

It is part of a VND550 million program called Long-term Scholarships STF-Pepsi that STF under Saigon Times Group and PepsiCo Vietnam has been running since the 2008-2009 academic year. The recipients are poor students with good grades from ten universities in HCMC, Hanoi and Danang.

VND100 million in scholarships was awarded to 10 students on Saturday, VND10 million each for their last two years of study. On August 14, the two organizations granted VND50-million in scholarships to five students in Can Tho City, and the program will go to Danang and Hanoi in September and October. 

Also at the scholarship awarding ceremony, Pham Phu Ngoc Trai, former president of PepsiCo in Indochina hosted a discussion with 2,000 students of HCMC University of Economics and other universities. He shared his experience and gave useful advice to students about study, finding jobs and getting involved in charity activities.

PepsiCo and Saigon Times Group also has a blood donor program since 2008 and a project to provide computers for schools in remote areas since May.

After the ceremony, there was a meeting with actor Chi Bao and singer Ha Anh Tuan as well as an introduction about the book Understanding the Heart written by Minh Niem. The book is a collection of fifty articles about the spiritual side of dealing with heart disease. All the profits from book sales will be donated to poor children and provide surgery for children with heart problems.
