Mai Phuong Thuy likely to win fifth HTV Award

HCMC Television Station (HTV) will open the fifth HTV Awards next month to honor local artists with outstanding achievements during the last year.

Awards will be presented to artists in music, cinematography and drama who appear on HTV and who have greatly contributed to HTV programs in particular and to the community in general.

HTV reporters and journalists from prestigious newspapers are among the judges to pick five winners for each of the six categories (male acting, female acting, music band, drama, comedy, and cai luong).

Miss Vietnam 2006 Mai Phuong Thuy has secured the first place in the top 5 favorite actresses voted by HTV’s audience for starring as an HIV/AID victim suffering social stigma in the movie “Negative” directed by Phuong Dien in 2007.

The movie has aroused much attention from the audience in recent times.

Actresses Minh Hang, Le Be La, Van Trang, Thuy Trang, and Thanh Van will also compete in this category.

Top 5 favorite actors are Huynh Dong, Truong Minh Quoc Thai, Khuong Ngoc, Hoa Hiep, and Hoang Son.

In the female singer category, pop stars My Tam, Ho Quynh Huong, and Ho Ngoc Ha surprisingly were absent from the top 5 list while singer Thu Minh has for the first time ranked first in the top 5.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place at 20:30 pm on April 4 and will be broadcast live on HTV9 channel.

Anti-hunting film wins green movie award

HA NOI — A film featuring the illegal hunting of wild animals won a special prize at the fourth Environmental Film Festival held in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

Le Hoai Phuong received VND30 million and the Viet Nam Green Award for his documentary Toi Ac Rung Xanh (Crime in the Forest).

The film depicts hunting activities of wild animals in Binh Thuan Province.

The film's topics and visual effects have left a strong impression on the jury and audiences.

To make the film, Phuong and his staff spent three years following and working with illegal hunters, who agreed to the filming but asked the director to conceal their faces.

"Phuong's work condemns people who destroy forests and hunt wild animals. His film's message calls on people to protect and keep the world and environment safe from disease," said Bui Dinh Hac, veteran film director.

The VND20 million first prize was shared by Vuong Duc for the movie Rung Den (Black Forest), Gia Hung for the documentary Ngu Ngon Thoi Nay (Modern Fable), Trong Hoa for the investigating report Thien Tai va Nhan Tai (Natural Calamities and Man-Made Calamities), and Nguyen Nhan Lap's cartoon Meo Vat (Small Trick).

Ha Noi-skilled director Duc's Rung Den is a quality film that attracted young audiences back to the cinema after its release in 2008. It featured young actors such as Kieu Chinh and Thach Kim Long.

The film described the tragic lives of people who destroy forest land.

Viet Nam Green winner Phuong said that making films featuring environmental problems was not a new experience in Viet Nam.

"Through our work, we hope audiences can learn about saving the natural world and have a visual treat as well," he said.

Organised by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and its partners, the Viet Nam Cinematography Association and Viet Nam Television, this year's national Environment Film Festival attracted 131 entries, including 70 investigating reports, 35 documentaries, 18 science films, four films and four cartoons. — VNS

Prize recognises young artists

HA NOI — Eight artists are in the running for the Young Talent Prize 2010 award that is being organised by the Cultural Development and Exchange Fund (CDEF).

Members of the public will be able to vote for their favourite entrant by visiting www.cuocthitainang2010.com from October 10 to 31.

The short-listed paintings can be viewed on the website or at the Ha Noi Fine Arts College on October 18.

Organisers said the competition is designed to attract original, unique and creative artists.

The competition is held annually by the CDEF. In past years, the contest has varied its focus to include experimental music, modern dance and performance.

The eight short-listed artists are Dao Anh Viet, Luong Van Trung, Le Tran Anh Tuan, Nguyen Hong Phuong, Pham Tuan Tu, Le Hoang Bich Phuong, Nguyen Xuan Hoang and Nguyen The Hung.

The eventual winner will receive a grant of US$1,000 and be given the opportunity to exhibit his or her work.

This year, 165 artists entered the competition.

The eight finalists were selected for their aesthetic appeal, relevance, context and originality, according to the judges.

The CDEF also said that VND2,000,000 ($100) would be given to the best on-line comment on the winning entrant.

"The general observation of the works, which deal with life and social problems, show that young artists are now examining and reflecting upon not just the abstract but issues that are important to society. They are concerned about their own lives and the position of youth in the contemporary world," said Natasha Kraevski, a member of the judging panel. — VNS
