Exhibition of Chinese artworks opens in Ha Noi

HA NOI — An exhibition of Chinese paintings, photos and calligraphies was opened recently in Ha Noi to mark the 61st anniversary of the establishment of Viet Nam-China diplomatic ties.

The event was jointly organised by the Viet Nam-China Cultural Exchange Club, the Ha Noi Library and the Federation of Literature and Art of China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

On display were 32 paintings, 60 photos and 40 works of calligraphy in Chinese script by 27 artists from Guangxi province, some of which were photos of President Ho Chi Minh taken during his visit to the province 50 years ago.

Rising star named as VN's first ‘Next Top Model'

HCM CITY — Khieu Thi Huyen Trang, 21, from Bac Giang Province won the first Viet Nam's Next Top Model competition on Sunday at the InterContinental Asiana Sai Gon Hotel in HCM City.

Fashion designer Huy Vo, a judge on the show, noted that Trang had not been the clear winner in previous shows.

"I was surprised by her excellent performance on the final night," said Vo. "She deserves the prize."

Trang, who stands 1.78m will sign a two-year contract with CA Model company worth US$50,000. She will receive a scholarship to take a model training course at the Wilhelmina Models Company. She also won a diamond ring worth VND200 million and a Piaggio LX125.

"I feel very happy about the prizes," Trang said. "This is my gift to my mother, who has supported me during the past few months."

During the past five months, the programme aired every Thursday night. On the show, 18 Vietnamese women, between the ages of 18 and 25, competed to become Viet Nam's Next Top Model.

Da Lat flowers showcased at blooming extravaganza

LAM DONG — The launching ceremony for a fresh flower showroom was opened in the Central Highlands city of Da Lat on Sunday by the Rung Hoa Biotechnology Joint Stock Company.

The 1,200 sq.m showroom features thousands of flowerpot including 60 varieties of temperate and tropical flowers, especially flower varieties specific to Da Lat such as orchid, cymbidium orchids, lyli, daisies and green apricot blossoms.

According to Rung Hoa company's General Director Nguyen Dinh Son, the showroom is built not only for business but also for introducing Da Lat's flowers to visitors. — VNS

HCM CITY — The three top contestants shortlisted from thousands of candidates for the Viet Nam's Next Top Model reality show will compete during the final round in HCM City on January 23.

After participating in training with foreign experts during a programme aired on VTV3 in September last year, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Lan, Khieu Thi Huyen Trang and Nguyen Thu Thuy said they had learned more about the job of a professional fashion model.

According to organisers, the winner will receive a VND2 billion contract for two years with CA Model, a training course in New York with Wilhelmina Models, the trainer of winners of the beauty contest American's Next Top Model. She will also receive several gifts worth a total of VND800 million.

In order to prepare for the important night, the finalists will have to work even harder for the show later this month.

On Tuesday the three flew to Singapore for a photo shoot for Her World magazine with foreign photographers.

During the final night of the competition, to be held at the InterContinental Asiana Saigon, another 15 candidates who had been selected in the top 18, will model on the catwalk with some of Viet Nam's favourite singers.

The contest, a version of the US hit television series America's Next Top Model, has aired 15 episodes that have contained many exciting and surprising moments.

America's Next Top Model, which premiered on US television in 2003, is a popular annual talent search that chronicles the transformation of everyday young women into potentially fierce supermodels.

The programme concept has been licensed internationally, and there are versions of the series in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Australia, South Korea, and China. — VNS

Vietnamese short stories introduced in Germany

BERLIN — A collection of short stories entitled Tuong Ve Huu (The Retired General), marking the 10th Berlin International Literature Festival, has been presented in Germany.

Author Nguyen Huy Thiep and Guenter Giesenfeld, president of Viet Nam-Germany Friendship Association, who took part in translating the collection into German, both discussed the works with various audiences.

The collection was presented in order to introduce new Vietnamese literature to German audiences.

Free movies for Ha Noi anniversary

HA NOI — A programme entitled Nhung Ngay Phim Viet Nam (Days of Viet Nam Films) will be screened as part of the Ha Noi anniversary celebrations on October 1-10 at the National Cinema Centre and August Cinema.

Admission will be free for movies including Long Thanh Cam Gia Ca (Musician in Thang Long Citadel) and Vuot Qua Ben Thuong Hai (Passing Shanghai Wharf) on the opening day.

The Viet Nam Cinema Department has organised the programme which will be shown throughout the country.

Late poet's birthday honoured in music and verse

HA NOI — Late poet To Huu's 90th birthday will be honoured at a programme of music and verse titled Dep Vo Cung To Quoc Ta Oi (Our Nation Is Very Beautiful) at the Ha Noi Opera House next Saturday.

Singers will recite the poet's works and the Viet Nam Writers' Association will hold a conference to discuss To Huu's poems.

Viet Nam's Next Top Model to premiere on VTV3

HCM CITY— The first episode of Viet Nam's Next Top Model, a television reality show that scouts potential female models, will be broadcast on the national entertainment channel VTV3 at 8pm next Thursday.

At two auditions last month in Ha Noi and HCM City, 18 girls were short-listed from more than 1,500 contestants aged between 18 and 25 from around the country.

The show will follow every move of the semi-finalists who will live together in a Cast House in HCM City for two months where they will be filmed 24/7.

They will be stripped of all means of communications to the outside world and will have no access to a mobile phone, computer, internet or newspaper.

On each show, a contestant will be eliminated after participating in challenges in different modelling skills like a photo-shoot, cat-walk and make-up.

Two finalists will be pitted against each other in the final gala show which will be aired live at the end of January.

This is the first season of the show, which is based on the show America's Next Top Model on CBS, a national TV network in the US. — VNS
