Vietnamese comic books translated into Japanese

Phan Thi Media Education and Entertainment JSC has agreed for Vietnam National University in Hanoi-Kyoto University Collaboration Office to translate the company’s comic series Danh Tac Viet Nam (Vietnamese Famous Works) into Japanese.

Phan Thi adapted the country’s great literary works into comic books last year. Danh Tac Viet Nam has three famous titles Chi Pheo by Nam Cao, Tat Den (Turn off the light) by Ngo Tat To and Giong To (Thunderstorm) by Vu Trong Phung.

“It’s a great opportunity for Vietnamese comic books to be promoted in Japan, which is home to a great number of comics,” Shin’E Toshihiko, director of the Vietnam National University in Hanoi-Kyoto University Collaboration Office, told the Daily.

The titles will be translated into Japanese together with another comic book published by Phan Thi named Orange about basket ball at Vietnamese schools. The translations will be done by Japanese lecturers who are teaching the language in Vietnam.

In August the Japanese version will be entered into Comiket, the Japanese Comic Market, which is the world’s largest self-published comic book fair, held twice a year in Tokyo, in August and December. It attracts over a half million people to join and many amateur comic artists attend.

A decade since Trinh Cong Son’s death

Events will be held around the country to mark the 10th death anniversary of famous Vietnamese songwriter, Trinh Cong Son, for a month from March 5 to April 4.

The program will start with two music nights directed by Pham Hoang Nam at the HCMC Opera House on March 18 and Hanoi Opera House on March 24.

A free touring live show by the Quang Dung singers will be start at Vietnam National University, Hanoi on March 27, before going to Nghinh Luong pavilion on March 3 and Vietnam National University HCMC on April 4. A music night called Hue-Saigon-Hanoi will follow at the Hoi Ngo club-house at Binh Quoi Tourist Area in HCMC’s Binh Thanh District. The event is being organized by his younger sister, singer Trinh Vinh Trinh, MC Do Trung Quan and Cao Lap.

On April 10, paintings made by the late song writer will be displayed at the White Palace in HCMC. The same day, Trinh Vinh Trinh will debut a website about Trinh Cong Son made by his family.

There will also be a painting exhibition featuring more than 30 paintings at HCMC Fine Art Museum in District 1. The show will tour to the Morin Hotel in Hue City.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Trinh Cong Son wrote over 600 songs. His songs have been translated into English, Japanese and French.

He died April 1, 2001.

Mexican artists to grace Hanoi stage

The Mexican percussion quartet Tambuco

World-renowned Mexican percussion group Tambuco will join with local troupe “Phao Hoa” (Fireworks) to perform at the Vietnam National Academy of Music at 8 pm tonight.

This event aimed to promote mutual cultural exchange between the two nations.

Tambuco Percussion Ensemble has celebrated its acclaimed career after 15 years of international concerts, establishing itself among the finest percussion quartet today.

Tambuco -- founded in 1993 by four distinguished Mexican musicians Bringas Alfredo, Gonzales Miguel, Tudon Raul, and Gallard Ricardo -- is ranked among the finest and most innovative in the world.

"Highest artistic quality, a great sense of aesthetic sense and technical virtuosity beyond any doubt," The Washington Post of the US said.

The Fireworks, a pioneer in performing contemporary music in Vietnam, was founded in 2002 by Vietnam National Academy of Music’s lecturers and students including Doan Mai Huong, Vu Nguyen Anh, Mac Thang Long, and Le Bang.

The troupe was invited to perform at Cracking Bamboo international percussion festival in 2008 and 2010 in Hanoi, which was the encounter between South-East Asian and European music.

The entry will be free at 77 Hao Nam Street, Dong Da District, Hanoi.

CIE grants US$35,000 in scholarships

Center for International Education (CIE) of Vietnam National University HCMC last week handed over 20 scholarships worth US$35,000 for its students at a ceremony to start the new school year at the Kim Do Hotel in HCMC’s District 1.

Five students in the MA program received scholarships worth US$1,000 each while fifteen students in the BA program received US$2,000 each. The scholarships aimed to honor outstanding freshmen, excellent academic results and contributions to the university’s social activities.

Nguyen Thi Kim Xuan, one of the freshmen who received CIE scholarships, said, “I would like to give my sincere thanks to my mother who has sacrificed all of her life to make what I am on Wednesday. And I’m proud to be a student of CIE with seasoned teachers and good friends. On behalf of all the freshmen, I promise to study hard to pay tribute to parents and teachers.”

CIE, which was established in 2001, is one of the nation’s leading educational organizations with its main function to operate international training programs jointly developed by Vietnam National University HCMC and prestigious foreign universities. The center has educated over 1,200 students and transferred more than 760 students to study at universities in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. 253 of them were granted scholarships worth US$3.1 million by universities in the U.S.

HCM City Hosts International Travel Expo

Saigontourists is among the key exhibitors at ITE HCMC 2010

The sixth International Travel Expo HCM City 2010, or ITE HCMC 2010, will take place in HCM City by the end of this month

Co-organized by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in coordination with the Vietnam National Trade Fair & Advertising Company (Vinexad) and IIR Exhibitions Singapore, this year’s event bears the topic “Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia, three countries one destination” and runs at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center in District 7’s Phu My Hung New Urban Area from September 30 to October 2.

The ITE HCMC was held the first time in 2005. To date, it has been confirmed to be a national tourism event of Vietnam by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The main activities at ITE HCMC 2010 are expected to include a program on surveying tourism products for buyers and the media, a seminar on introducing the inter-regional tour – three countries one destination; and a seminar on investing in tourism in Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia.

Featured at the ITE HCMC 2010 is the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. on September 30, which will be broadcast live on HTV channel. Coming next are transactions between sellers and buyers, including exchanging information, introducing products and signing contracts on sending and receiving guests between local and foreign tourism companies.

Saigontourist Holding Company will be among the key exhibitors at the event. The 16 of its subsidiaries to join the ITE HCMC 2010 include Saigontourist Travel Service Co., Rex Hotel and Saigon-Phu Quoc Resort. These businesses will display and sell products and services through leaflets, brochures, CD-ROMs, VCDs/DVDs, and so forth.

Aside from the part of an exhibitor, Saigontourist is also one of the main sponsors for the expo. It will provide and sponsor tours, accommodation, conferences, among others.
